What a night photography tour of Tokyo is
It is a photographer who takes pictures of you in the neon, for an hour or more. You are the
subject and the city is the backdrop. You walk between spots the photographer knows, stop where
the light is good, and get your edited photos online afterwards.
There are two shapes. The long one is a two-and-a-half-hour small-group walk from Shinjuku to
Shibuya with a photographer-guide. The short ones are private one-hour shoots in a single district:
Kabukicho, Nishi-Shinjuku or the Shibuya scramble.
Fares sit close together, from $97.51 to $117.01 a person.
Why choose a night photography tour
Photos of you, not of the signs
On most trips the person holding the camera is the one missing from the pictures. Here someone
else holds it, knows where to stand you, and edits the results before you get them.
The neon does the lighting
Kabukicho and the scramble are lit all evening. The walk starts at 5:30pm, which is before
sunset from 24 February to 27 September, so in summer your first photos are in daylight and the neon
comes on as you walk.
Help if you have never posed
The Nishi-Shinjuku shoot includes posing guidance and needs no experience. The Shibuya shoot
works in a natural, relaxed style, which suits you if you freeze in front of a lens.
A guide as well as a photographer
On the long walk your photographer is also your guide: through the neon of Nishi-Shinjuku,
about fifteen minutes in Golden Gai, half an hour in Kabukicho, a train to Shibuya together and
about 40 minutes at the crossing.

Planning a night photography tour
- Budget: $97.51 to $102.38 a person for a private hour, $117.01 for the
walk. Train fares and anything you eat are on top.
- Arrive early: be at the Lion statue ten minutes before 5:30pm. The walk's
operator turns away anyone 15 minutes late, with no refund.
- Light: the walk starts in daylight from 24 February to 27 September and after
sunset in the other months. Sunset for each month is on our sunset and weather by month.
- Wear: comfortable shoes, because the walk covers about 3 km, and something
you like being photographed in.

For the most photos from one hour, the Shibuya shoot, with 35 or more. For a guided evening with photos along the way, the 5:30pm walk from Shinjuku.
Is the photography tour worth it if I dislike being photographed?
Probably not the 2.5-hour walk: one reviewer says plainly that it may not be your tour. The private Shibuya shoot works in a natural, relaxed style, and a plain guided walk has no camera at all.
How many photos do I get?
Twenty edited photos on the 2.5-hour walk, at least 20 per guest on the Kabukicho shoot, and 35 or more on the private Shibuya shoot. They arrive by email or in an online gallery.
Is the 5:30pm walk in the dark?
Not from 24 February to 27 September, when the sun sets after 5:30pm and the first part of the walk is in daylight. In the other months it starts after sunset.
What if I am late?
The MagicalTrip tours refuse entry at 15 minutes late, with no refund, so be at the meeting point 10 minutes early. The pub crawl's group leaves the first bar at about 8:15pm.
Will the photographer teach me to use my camera?
