Tokyo Night Tour Options

You can spend a Tokyo evening on foot, in a car, on the bay or in a seat at one show. Each gives you a different city. Weighing up Tokyo Night guided tours? Here is every way to do it side by side, with the question that matters most: will it be dark when you start?

Most evenings begin at a station exit in Shinjuku or Shibuya. The drives pick you up at your hotel instead, and the boat leaves from a terminal on the bay. The sections below take each kind of evening in turn. Then you can compare price, length and start time in one place.

On foot, by car, on the bay or in one room

On foot: Guided walks, bar nights, food walks and photo shoots. You meet at a station exit in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno or Shimbashi, or at a bar in Roppongi. A guided walk costs $20.80 to $26 a person. A photographer costs $97.51 to $117.01.

By car: JDM (Japanese domestic market) drives take you to the car meet at the Daikoku Parking Area, from $79.56 to $146.26 a person in a shared car. Private driver-guided evenings loop the lit landmarks for your group, from $244.20 to $594.78 per group.

On the bay: A 90-minute yakatabune dinner cruise from Etchujima, $100.48 per person. You eat beef sukiyaki at low tables as the boat crosses Tokyo Bay to Odaiba and passes Rainbow Bridge.

In one room: A seated sumo show in Ginza by retired wrestlers, $61.05 per person. Its listing prints no show times. Check the times offered before you plan your day round it.

Every kind of evening side by side

Here is the whole range in one table. Fares are the captured from-prices. "Start" is the time a listing prints; where it prints none, you choose or confirm it when you book.

The private drives price by the group, so four friends pay one fare. The photo shoots price by the head, and the price per person falls as your group grows. The car-meet drives are per person, and your group may be split across cars.

Which tours start after dark all year

Tokyo's sunset moves by 2 hours 33 minutes across the year. It falls at 4:28pm from 29 November to 13 December and at 7:01pm from 24 June to 4 July. Japan has no daylight saving, so it never jumps. A printed start can be daylight in one month and night in another. Here is what each published start looks like on the 15th of each month.

Every start at 7:30pm or later is after sunset all year. That covers the pub crawl at 8pm, the car-meet drives at 8pm and 8:30pm, and the midnight run at 11:30pm. A 7pm start comes before sunset only from 24 June to 4 July, and then by a minute.

The earlier starts are the ones to check. The 5pm wagyu dinner begins before sunset from 25 January to 19 October. The 5:30pm photography walk begins before sunset from 24 February to 27 September. On those dates you set out in daylight and walk into dusk as the signs come on.

Private for your group or shared with strangers

This matters more at night than by day. A shared tour is a fast way to meet people. A private one lets you set the pace and skip a stop.

On the car-meet drives, you may ride in a different car from your friends. One operator says so plainly, so ask when you book if you want to stay together. The private drives keep your group in one vehicle.

Hotel pickup or a station exit

• Hotel pickup: the private driver-guided evenings, the Christmas-lights drive and the car-meet drive with a seat in a sports car. The customizable drive also picks you up at Haneda Airport.
• Kawasaki, Haneda or Yokohama only: the factory-lights drive. It does not pick up in central Tokyo.
• A station exit: most walks, bar nights and photo shoots. Shinjuku Station's East Exit is the most common, at the Lion statue or the police box beside it.
• A kerb in Shibuya or Harajuku: the shared car-meet drives, from Koen-dori, Dogenzaka, Sakuragaoka or the Harajuku bus stop.
• A terminal or a venue: Etchujima Terminal for the dinner cruise, and Ginza INZ 1 for the sumo show.

What each kind of evening costs

The fare tells you less than what it covers. Read this table with the notes below it.

The Ueno crawl includes dinner and drinks. The pub crawl includes club entry and shots, and you buy your other drinks. On the pachinko walk, the game money is extra. The drives stop outside Tokyo Tower, and none of them includes a deck ticket.

Some fares are sale prices with an end date. The car-meet drive from $79.56 a person is one of them, so the price you see after 30 September may be higher.

No helicopter, no bus: what exists instead

For a seat on wheels, a private driver-guided evening is the nearest thing to a bus loop. It stops at the lit landmarks and waits while you take photos. The go-karts in Shibuya are costumed karting, not Mario Kart, and their listing publishes no evening times.

Choosing by who is coming

• On your own: the pub crawl ($24.70, Fridays and Saturdays) or a small-group walk. You meet people in the first ten minutes.
• A couple: the dinner cruise across the bay, or the wagyu dinner in Ginza at 5pm.
• A family with teenagers: a car-meet drive, since one operator welcomes children, or a private drive with child seats on request. The bar nights are 20 and over, and the wagyu dinner takes no children under 6.
• A group of friends: a private drive priced per group, or the uni-students karaoke night.
• Car fans: the Daikoku Parking Area drives, at 7pm, 8pm, 8:30pm or the 11:30pm midnight run.
• Your first night: the Ueno tavern crawl ($107.26), with dinner and drinks in the fare.
• A Haneda layover: the customizable drive, which picks you up at the airport, or the factory-lights drive from Kawasaki, Haneda or Yokohama.
