Two things decide what a Tokyo evening feels like: when the sun sets, and how warm or wet the night is. Sunset moves by 2 hours 33 minutes across the year. Evening lows run from 1°C (34°F) in January to 24°C (74°F) in August. Before you book Tokyo Night booking, check your month.
Sunset falls at 4:28pm from 29 November to 13 December and at 7:01pm from 24 June to 4 July. The photography walk leaves at 5:30pm all year. In June you set out in full daylight; in December the signs have been lit for an hour. Japan has no daylight saving, so the change is gradual.
Summer brings heat and rain. August averages a high of 31°C (88°F), and the operators warn of highs up to 40°C. The rainy season runs from about 7 June to about 19 July in an average year. September and October are the wettest months, and typhoons can close the decks: in 2026, Tokyo Skytree closed for a day as one approached.
Rain alone rarely stops a tour. The car-meet drives run in light rain, and the walks go ahead with umbrellas. Bad weather can close the Shibuya Sky rooftop and the Tokyo Tower Top Deck Tour, and some operators then offer a new date or a full refund.
Each month gives the average high and low in central Tokyo, from the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991-2020 normals, and the sunset on the 15th from the National Astronomical Observatory. Use the low for your evening.
The coldest month, with an average low of 1°C (34°F). Sunset is 4:51pm on the 15th, so a 5pm dinner starts after sunset. It is one of the driest months, with 60 mm of rain. Dress warmly for the car meet, where you stand outside for about an hour.
Still cold, with a low of 2°C (36°F) and the least rain of the year, 56 mm. Sunset reaches 5:22pm by mid-month. From 24 February, the 5:30pm photography walk starts before sunset again and walks into dusk. Dress for the wind by the bay if you take the dinner cruise.
Evenings warm to a low of 5°C (41°F), but rain doubles to 116 mm. The sun sets at 5:48pm on the 15th. Both the 5pm and the 5:30pm starts now begin in daylight. Carry a light umbrella on a walking tour.
Lows reach 10°C (50°F) and highs 19°C (67°F). Sunset passes 6pm and reaches 6:14pm on the 15th. A 7pm drive still starts after sunset. Bring a layer for the open rooftop deck, where the wind is stronger than in the street.
Mild evenings, with a low of 15°C (58°F) and 140 mm of rain. Sunset is 6:39pm on the 15th. A 7pm drive starts after sunset, while a 5:30pm walk starts in daylight. This is one of the easiest months for a long evening on foot.
The rainy season begins, around 7 June in an average year. Rain rises to 168 mm and humidity to 75%. Sunset reaches 7:01pm from 24 June, the latest of the year. A 7pm start is then a minute before sunset.
The rainy season ends around 19 July in an average year. Evenings stay warm, with a low of 22°C (72°F) and a high of 30°C (86°F). Sunset is 6:57pm on the 15th. Humidity averages 76%, so walk slowly and drink water.
The hottest month, with a high of 31°C (88°F) and a low of 24°C (74°F), the warmest nights of the year. Sunset falls to 6:31pm by the 15th. The operators warn that summer highs can reach 40°C. Carry water on a walking tour.
Rain climbs to 225 mm, and typhoons can close the open decks. Lows stay near 20°C (69°F). Sunset is 5:49pm on the 15th. By the end of the month, the 5:30pm photography walk starts at sunset or after it. Check the forecast the day before, and cancel 24 hours ahead if a storm is coming.
The wettest month in the normals, with 235 mm. Evenings cool to a low of 15°C (59°F). Sunset falls from 5:26pm on the 1st to 5:06pm on the 15th. By 20 October, a 5pm dinner also starts at sunset or after it.
Drier, cooler evenings, with 96 mm of rain and a low of 9°C (48°F). Sunset is 4:35pm by the 15th. Every published start time is now after sunset. Bring a warm layer for the hour you stand outside at the car meet.
The earliest dark of the year: sunset is 4:28pm from 29 November to 13 December. Lows average 4°C (39°F). The Christmas-lights drive tours the winter lights, and its listing publishes no dates. Check the dates on offer early. Dry, clear nights make this a good month for the rooftop and the decks.

For mild evenings on foot, come in spring or autumn. April, May, October and November have lows between about 9°C and 15°C. In October and November, every published start after 5pm is after sunset or close to it.
For the earliest dark and dry air, come in winter. From November to late January the sun sets before 5pm, so any evening tour starts after sunset. Dress for about 1°C to 4°C lows, and more wind by the bay.
Summer gives you the longest light and the heaviest air. From June to August, only a start at 7:30pm or later is after sunset on every date. The rainy season fills June and most of July, and August's average low stays above 23°C.
If you can choose, start about half an hour before sunset for your month. You see the last light, then the signs and towers switch on around you. In June, that means about 6:30pm; in December, about 4pm.
For the car meet, later is better: the drives leave at 7pm, 8pm, 8:30pm or 11:30pm. Plan the end of the evening too. Trains generally stop from about 12:30am.
