There is no single ticket to Tokyo at night, so the real choice is which evening you want. This guide compares the Tokyo Night guided tours by how you move, where the evening is, and whether it is dark when you start, then ends with a shortlist you can book from.

Which Tokyo night tour is best for a first night?

For most first nights, the Ueno taverns crawl. It is the best-rated evening with more than a thousand reviews: 4.9 from 1,176. Dinner and drinks are in the fare, the group is ten at most, and your guide orders and translates at each stop. Guests often book it for their first night in the city, because it does the hard part for you.

If you would rather see the neon than sit in it, take the 5:30pm photo walk from Shinjuku to the Shibuya scramble. If jet lag has you awake and restless, a driver-guided evening by car shows you the most of the city in four hours.

Food tour or bar tour?

The difference is what the fare pays for. A food tour puts dinner in the fare: the Ueno crawl at $107.26, the A5 wagyu dinner in Ginza at $214.51, or sukiyaki on the bay at $100.48. A bar tour pays for the start of a night out and leaves the rest to you. The Roppongi pub crawl is $24.70 for shots and club entry, and the custom night is $84.50 for the first round and two dishes.

On foot or by car?

On foot, you see a district closely: the lanes of Shinjuku, the back streets of Shibuya, the tracks at Ueno. A guided walk costs $20.80 to $26 a person and lasts 90 minutes to two and a half hours.

By car, you see what is too far apart to walk: the bay and Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, the temple at Asakusa and the crossings, in one evening. Is a JDM car meet tour worth it if you are not into cars?

Be honest with yourself here. The heart of the evening is about an hour in a car park, the Daikoku Parking Area, where owners gather with tuned cars after dark. Nobody can promise which cars come, and police can close the car park without notice. The rest of the time you are on the expressways, which is a fine way to see the lit city, but it is still a car evening.

Is a night photography tour worth the money?

At $117.01, the photo walk is two and a half hours with a photographer-guide, one drink and 20 edited photos of you. A private one-hour shoot costs $97.51 to $102.38 a person. Set against a plain walk at $20.80 to $26, you are paying for the photos.

Private driver or a shared walk?

For one or two people, a shared walk wins on price: two people on the backstreets walk pay $43.50 between them. For four, the sums change. The customizable drive is $318.52 for up to five, which is $79.63 each for four, and it collects you at your hotel or at Haneda.

Which night tours start after dark?

Sunset in Tokyo moves from 4:28pm to 7:01pm across the year, so the same start time can be daylight in June and full night in December.

• Dark all year: any start at 7:30pm or later. That covers the pub crawl at 8:00pm and the car-meet drives at 8:00pm, 8:30pm and 11:30pm.
• Dark almost all year: the 7:00pm drives, which start before sunset only from 24 June to 4 July.
• Into the dusk: the photo walk at 5:30pm starts before sunset from 24 February to 27 September, and the wagyu dinner at 5:00pm from 25 January to 19 October.
• Your choice: the private drives and most walks set the time when you book, so ask for a start after sunset.

What about the dinner cruise on the bay?

It is the one evening on the water: 90 minutes on a yakatabune houseboat from Etchujima Terminal, across the bay towards Odaiba and past Rainbow Bridge. You eat beef sukiyaki with unlimited soft drinks while a shamisen player performs, and alcohol comes with a free-flow package. It is rated 4.7 from 1,302 reviews.

Book it for the view and the setting rather than a gourmet meal. You sit on tatami over a sunken floor with your shoes off, you may share a table, and it does not suit anyone with back problems.

Which night tour suits teenagers?

The drinking age in Japan is 20, so the bar tours are out. Car-mad teenagers are welcome on the 7:00pm car-meet drive from Shibuya, and another drive offers a booster seat for younger children. The photo walk and the guided walks suit teenagers well, and a private drive suits a family best of all.

The go-kart convoy in Shibuya takes drivers of 18 and over only, and it publishes no evening times, so it is not a night option.

Which one for a date night?

The wagyu dinner seats you at a Ginza table in a group of seven at most, with sake to start. The dinner cruise gives you the bay and the lights from a tatami floor. A private shoot for two at the scramble leaves you with 35 or more photos of the evening. For something quieter, a private drive for up to three collects you from your hotel and takes you back again.

Who should skip a night tour?
